Tributes Pour In For Vice Chancellor Who Died 24 Hours After Resuming Office

Professor Cater Dike Nnamdi Umeoduagu, the newly appointed substantive Vice Chancellor of Tansian University, Oba, Anambra State, has died barely 24 hours after assuming office.

Professor Umeoduagu was formally sworn in as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the university on Friday, October 2, 2026. However, he reportedly fell ill later that same night.

Sadly, he passed away around midnight of Saturday, October 3, 2026, less than 24 hours after taking the oath of office.

The late professor was also a former lawmaker in Anambra State who represented Auguata  Constituency 1 at the Anambra State House of Assembly.

His sudden death has left the university community, political associates, colleagues, friends and family in shock, coming at a time when he had only just assumed leadership of the institution.

Tributes have continue to pour in for Prof Carter Umeh who died 24 hours after he was appointed as the Ag Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University

‘Carterlist For Change’ Bows Out

I received with sadness the news of the passing of Professor Carter Umeh this weekend.

Professor Umeh was a vibrant and energetic personality who distinguished himself both in public service, as a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, and in academia at Tansian University.

During his political days, I coined the campaign slogan, “Carterlist For Change,” for him. He loved the slogan, and it became associated with his political aspirations.

Umuchu-born Professor Umeh who represented Aguata 1 constituency in the state Assembly was among the APGA members of the Anambra State House of Assembly who rebelled and defected to the APC in 2021, a development that generated considerable political interest in Anambra State during the final months of the administration of Chief Willie Obiano, and ahead of the election that brought Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to office.

Although he did not return to the House of Assembly, Professor Umeh subsequently devoted himself to academia, where he rose rapidly through the ranks and eventually became Acting Vice Chancellor of Tansian University.

His leadership came at a particularly challenging period in the history of the university, which has experienced academic and labour difficulties amid lingering ownership and leadership disputes.

In a particularly poignant turn of events, Professor Carter Umeh was reportedly sworn in as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Tansian University on Friday, 2 October 2026. Sadly, barely a day later, he passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 3 October 2026.

It is heartbreaking that a new chapter in his academic career had only just begun before death came calling.

My condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, the Tansian University community and all those whose lives he touched through politics, academia and public service.

May the soul of Professor Carter Umeh rest in peace. Amen.

Dr. Uche Nworah
