The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step down with immediate effect following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The decision was announced by the NFF Executive Committee on Monday, August 17, 2026, after a disappointing campaign for the nine-time African champions. The federation did not give a detailed reason in its brief announcement, but the decision follows the team’s recent setbacks at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying playoffs.
Nigeria were eliminated by Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals, losing 1–0. The defeat ended the Falcons’ hopes of securing an automatic World Cup qualification spot through the tournament.
The Falcons were subsequently given another opportunity to qualify through the African playoff route but lost 2–1 to South Africa, meaning Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.
The NFF had also set up a committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the Falcons’ failure to qualify and recommend measures to address the challenges affecting Nigeria’s national teams.
