Goods worth millions
of Naira were today destroyed during a demolishing exercise at the popular Zone
3 Wuse retail market in Abuja.
According to CKN News reporters who were at the scene
of the demolition, bulldozers from the Federal Capital Development Authority
arrived the market as early as 6.00am this morning aided by fully armed security
personals made of the Army, Police and Civil Defence began a massive demolition
of the shops.
The traders who were taken by surprised by the
development were seen weeping and trying to salvage what was left of their
goods.
The market which housed several electronic, computer accessory
shops and other merchandize was a total shadow of its self after the exercise
that lasted several hours.
Some of the traders who spoke to CKN News said they had
no prior notice of the demolition..According to one of them, “I just restocked
my shop yesterday with goods worth over five million Naira”.
They wondered why the FCT administration would decide
to pull down the infrastructures at this critical period of recession when
people makes end meet .
One of the officials of the FCDA who spoke to our
reporters on condition of anonymity said the traders have been given prior
notice of the pending demolition but they disregarded it.
According to him,the shops were erected on government
land and hence they have to be pulled down.
At the last count,over one hundred and fifty shops were
affected by the demolition.
