The Presidency
has confirmed that hundreds of people were killed in the recent clashes between
herders and natives of four communities of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue
State.
The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said in a statement yesterday his principal expressed deep shock at the incident.
The
presidential spokesman also disclosed that President Buhari had ordered an
investigation into the clashes.
“President Buhari who expressed deep shock at the latest incident during the past week, which led to hundreds of deaths in four communities in Agatu, Benue State, ordered security agencies to get to the root causes of the problem,” Shehu said.
He quoted the president as saying that “We will conduct an investigation to know exactly what happened; the only way to bring an end to the violence once and for all is to look beyond one incident and ascertain exactly what factors are behind the conflicts.”
The presidential aide also quoted President Buhari as saying that all Nigerians must learn to live together as one, in peace and unity.
