A 72-year-old mother of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and
Survey, Madam Patimi Akene, has re-united with her family after her eventual
release by suspected kidnappers at the weekend. However, it could not be
confirmed whether any ransom was paid by the family members.
Barely 26 days ago, Madam Akene was kidnapped in her home town, Fonibiri
in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, and was taken to an
unknown destination.
The family of the victim immediately established a link with the
abductors who, in turn, demanded the resignation of Furoebi Akene, one of the
children of the victims, from the cabinet of Governor Seriake Dickson in the
state.
Disturbed by the trend, the family alerted security operatives. The
effort paid off at the weekend as the victim was released and brought to the
Lobia community waterside.
On whether the woman will be relocated to Yenagoa or Abuja, the source said
she is loved by her people and there is no need of moving her away from them.
Confirming he release, the State Commissioner of Police, Hilary Okpara
said: “Mama has been released. We thank God she is hale and hearty and we want
to thank all those who assisted us in ensuring her safe return.”
