All is not well within the umbrella body for Christians in Nigeria,
the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), as the Catholic Church has
withdrawn its membership of the body. The Diocesan
Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Monsignor Christopher Ajala,
stated this at a news conference organised as part of the activities to mark
the 15th anniversary of the creation of the diocese. Monsignor Ajala stated
that the Catholic church suspended its activities in CAN because it was too
close to government. He alleged that the Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor-led CAN had
derailed from the objectives of the body, adding that the Catholic Bishops
Conference was not comfortable with the development, hence its decision to pull
out. His words: “The Catholic Church took their stand before the purchase or
the aircraft was donated to him. But what the Catholic Bishops Conference is
complaining about is about the way they are running the national CAN now that
is not meeting the objectives and the goals of CAN and the forefathers of CAN.
“CAN is now being run as part of the government and we said no. “Because they
(government) will dictate to us what to do and they will not take our advice
seriously. The Catholic Church decided to withdraw from the activities of CAN
at national level; we are still part of the state. We made our stand clear in
November, last year, and by December, the man bought a jet. I don’t know how he
got it but the president was there on that day the jet was delivered to him.
“So, what we are saying is that our religious leaders should be honest, upright
and they should also be the conscience of this nation. “If you are bought, the
masses of this country are finished. If you can use money to buy our religious
leaders, then there is no hope for the common man. That is the Catholic
Church’s stand. We are supposed to speak for the people to correct the wrongs
in the society"

ReplyDeleteBesides what the catholic bishops gave as their reasons, CAN is no longer focused and never concerned with the happenings in the christian forum, especially with the pensticostal churches. Pastors commit serious crimes more than our the so called criminals, crimes ranging from ritual killings, rape, fraud, impregnating choir members, fighting family members etc. Yet CAN has not suspended any church or pastor for these horrible offences. How can they advise the govt when their own various churches are on fire. I guess these happenings suggest that the end of the world is very near. May God help us all.
ReplyDeleteThe end shall tell,TB JOSHUA See long ago that is why he said spirit is to rule the flesh not the flesh, flesh is worldly.men of GOD return to things of the Spirit.pray for Nigeria

ReplyDeleteGod bless the Catholic Church as they withdraw from CAN before it becomes a political party. Our "father's in the Lord" do not care about followers of Christ, they are busy dining with the devil with a short spoon. Judgement shall start from the house of God. So let us beware.

ReplyDeleteMy fellow readers, beer is an alcoholic beverage. Also wine is an alcoholic beverage. Please confirm from the dictionary. There is nothing like a non alcoholic wine. Jesus changed water into wine, meaning that God permits drinking of alcohol, what he frowns at is the abuse. So a priest can drink a bottle of bear if he chooses to do so. Let us not allow doctrine of these new churches decieve us from the main race. Even holy communion wine in orthodox churches contain little volume of alcohol. The debate on ground is about CAN. And we can all see that they are no longer focusing on d objective of the organisation. Even little children know that this present govt administration has not been the best. Yet CAN is not seeing anything Bad in d administration. Its leadership has been compromised.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with owning a jet, if the jet will assist in the work of God. God does not condemn people for being rich, he only judges what they did with the wealth and how they got it. Let us pray for our leaders cos one day u could be in their shoe. Mr Bright Abuja

ReplyDeleteI have said it before time without numbers that the church is meant to correct and lead his fellowers in the right directions but no in nigeria what we now see is talk about riches and no more salvation. i dare any body to show me where in the bible men of God are rich in terms of money. Even Christ who is our Lord showed very good examples. He never preached money rather we stood for truth and for sinners to be converted to real good worshippers of God Almighty. During the days of Christ, He never bought or own houses, the highest He did was to ride on a donkey which he even borrowed. so withdrawal of the Catholic from CAN is a very well come idea. if the christaian body can not fight and stand for the truth who then will.
ReplyDeleteI have gone through most comment and its so shocking to know that many nigerians are not christians but followers of pastors and priest. What is on ground is not all about catholic or pentecostal. It is all about standing for the truth. One thing i want people to get clear is that the catholics did not say they are most righteous or better chriastians but that they are withdrawing from CAN because the body has detrailed from the objectives for which the body was set up and i personally did not see anything wrong with that. In every churches on this earth we have the good, bad and the urgly. No body can claime he or she is a better person only God knows that. so my dear people let us look at things objectively and stop criticing unnecessary things we know little about.
ReplyDeletei am glad by the site chigoo posted. But there is one question i would want to ask chigoo can he swear before God that he has no dark secret in his life. Hence i said this is not a fight between catholic or pentecostal but a fight to stand for the truth. I urge all nigerians to pary to God for understanding of the bible. Moreso i can decide to join an organisation and at the same time pull out if i am not satisfied with their conduct. God bless u all
ReplyDeleteIs it poverty or illiteracy or what that makes most Nigerians so bitter and spiteful against one another. Every subject is an opportunity to exchange insults & curses instead of constructively addressing issues with a view to achieve harmony. What has drinking of beer got to do with the issue under discussion. Practice ur faith, allow others to practice theirs. The Perfect God is the final Judge, not man. I salute the Catholic Bishops for their courage, but please, let all defaulting parties take correction & give room for reconciliation. What holds us together should be stronger than what divides us apart. God bless all.
