The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has escaped unhurt after suspected gunmen opened fire on his convoy near the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport on Friday night, October 30.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9pm shortly after Dan’iya escorted former Sokoto State Governor and Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to the airport.
His bulletproof vehicles were reportedly damaged during the shooting.
In a statement through his media aide, Dan’iya alleged that personnel of the Sokoto Marshal and the State Community Guard blocked his convoy and that gunshots were fired after attempts to resolve the confrontation failed. He also claimed that two DSS operatives attached to his security team were detained.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed receiving a report of the incident and said it would take necessary action.
Dan’iya has called for an investigation, while the allegations against the state security outfits had not been independently verified as of the time of reporting.
