President Donald Trump has told some of his allies in recent days that he’s considering replacing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
Trump had asked those allies in the run-up to Tuesday’s elections who they think should succeed Hegseth, these people told NBC News.
Some of Hegseth’s upcoming travel was put on hold, according to four people familiar with the matter. Two of them said the change could be over a potential resumption of major military action in Iran, which Trump has said he’s considering, or it could be related to post-midterm politics.
Trump said Wednesday that he is not planning to replace Hegseth.
