Segun Showunmi, a member of President Bola Tinubu’s Campaign Council, has warned Peter Obi and other opposition figures against announcing their own election results before INEC officially declares the winner. He cautioned that such an action could attract serious legal consequences.
In a video circulating on social media, Showunmi referred to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, who was imprisoned after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which he was widely believed to have won.
“I heard some people saying that they will release their own results before INEC. Anybody who attempts to declare himself will be taken for treason,” Showunmi warned.
He further argued that INEC remains the legally authorised body to declare election winners, adding that opposition politicians should understand the possible consequences of attempting to announce their own results.
