Why Former Osun Deputy Governor Declined Adeleke’s Appointment

Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Prince (Mrs) Titi Laoye-Ponle, has declined her nomination as a member of the Governing Council of Osun State University (UNIOSUN).

Her decision was disclosed by the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, during a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House, Osogbo, on Sunday.

Basiru explained that Laoye-Ponle was expected to accompany him on the visit to personally communicate her decision to the governor but was unable to attend.

According to him, the former deputy governor declined the appointment because she is currently serving as the Chairman of the Governing Council of a federal institution.

“She said I should tell you she is not concerned about capacity, but she is presently the Chairman of the Governing Council of one of our federal institutions,” Basiru said.

Basiru added that Laoye-Ponle appreciated Governor Adeleke for considering her for the appointment and expressed her willingness to contribute to the development of Osun State whenever another opportunity arises.

The development followed Governor Adeleke’s decision last Friday to dissolve the existing Governing Council of UNIOSUN and constitute a new council as part of efforts to strengthen the administration and governance of the institution.

The reconstituted council is chaired by Sooko (Prof.) Adewale Abiodun Oladipo as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman. Oladipo previously headed the dissolved council.

Other members of the new council include Alhaji Gbadegesin Lawal, Otunba Titi Laoye-Ponnle, Mr Akinola Franklin Omoniyi, Chief Funminiyi Awotide, Mr Orija Samuel Adebayo and Mrs Adewale Adetayo Bola.

Governor Adeleke had charged the newly appointed members to build on the achievements recorded by the university and provide the necessary support for its continued academic and institutional development.

The new Governing Council members were formally inaugurated by the governor at the Government House on Monday.
