Tanzania’s President Loses Husband

Tanzania has been plunged into mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Mr. Ameir died on the morning of Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar. His death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi.

Known for his quiet and private nature, Hafidh Ameir was an agricultural academic who largely remained away from the political spotlight. When President Samia became Tanzania’s first female president in 2021, he assumed the historic role of Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman.

The couple married in 1978 and were blessed with four children—three sons and one daughter.

As Tanzania mourns, messages of condolences are being sent to President Samia, her family, and the people of Tanzania.
