The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has uncovered several suspected cybercrime operations involving alleged financial diversion, stolen-phone banking fraud and identity theft, with investigations spanning multiple cases.
According to the NPF-NCCC, one of the investigations involves an alleged ₦6.174 billion financial diversion. The police said 761 successful payments were traced to 105 beneficiaries across 19 banks, while two suspects have been arrested and efforts are ongoing to locate another suspect.
In a separate investigation in Abuja, the police said stolen mobile phones were allegedly used to gain unauthorised access to victims’ bank accounts, allowing funds to be withdrawn and transferred. The case highlights the growing risks associated with mobile devices and access to banking applications.
The NPF-NCCC also disclosed an investigation into the disappearance of 222 iPhones and 15 smartwatches valued at about $144,440. Five suspects were reportedly arrested in connection with the case, while six suspected stolen devices were recovered during the investigation.
The police cybercrime centre urged members of the public to remain vigilant when using digital platforms and warned against activities including cyberbullying, cyberstalking, criminal defamation and the publication of false information. The agency said investigations into the various cases are continuing.
