For Samson, it was supposed to be another ordinary day at work.
The mechanic, who operated his workshop around Warike Estate in Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, was reportedly contacted about a Mercedes-Benz that needed repairs.
He left his workshop to attend to the supposed customer.
But according to information gathered from the police, Samson never returned.
The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday, September 15, after he was allegedly lured to a location under the guise of repairing the vehicle.
Rather than meeting the car and its owner, however, Samson was allegedly taken away from the area and led into a bush.
It was reportedly there that he was attacked and hacked to death.
The circumstances surrounding the incident soon raised suspicion, particularly because the mechanic had apparently gone out in response to what appeared to be a normal request for his professional services.
A police source confirmed that detectives were investigating the circumstances of the killing and trying to establish who was behind it.
The source also said suspected cultists were believed to have been connected to the attack, although investigators had yet to establish the full details.
But another account has emerged, suggesting that Samson's death may have been connected to an earlier cult-related killing in the same part of Ibeju-Lekki.
An anti-cultism advocacy platform alleged that the killing was carried out as retaliation for the death of a man identified as Ola Sheu.
Sheu was reportedly an Eiye member who was killed around Adeba Bus Stop in Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, on September 9. The platform alleged that members of the NBM were responsible for his death.
According to the account, Sheu's alleged cult identity was not widely known within the community.
That reportedly changed after a photograph of him wearing an Aye cult beret during his graduation was posted online as part of a birthday celebration.
The platform claimed that the photograph exposed his alleged affiliation to rival cultists, who subsequently targeted him.
It further alleged that Samson's killing was connected to the retaliation that followed.
However, this account has not been established by the police as the confirmed motive for Samson's death.
The police investigation began after Samson's family reported that they could no longer account for his whereabouts.
Following the report, detectives reportedly visited his apartment and began tracing his movements.
Police were also working to track his mobile phone, hoping that information from the device would help establish where he went after leaving for the supposed repair job.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the case had been reported and that investigation was ongoing.
For now, detectives are still trying to piece together what happened between the moment Samson left his workshop and the point where he was allegedly attacked.
The investigation is expected to determine who arranged the supposed Mercedes-Benz repair job, who took the mechanic into the bush, and whether the alleged cult rivalry was actually connected to his death.
