Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has condemned the reported attack and blockade of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State, describing the incident as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Kwankwaso said he was “deeply disturbed” by the incident, alleging that unruly elements were mobilised to block Obi’s convoy and prevent the NDC presidential candidate from entering Makurdi.
He stressed that freedom of movement is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and said the right should apply to Obi as a former governor and leading opposition figure.
Kwankwaso called on the Benue State Government to urgently identify and prosecute those responsible while ensuring the safety and free movement of Obi and his entourage.
He also urged President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors, particularly those in the ruling APC, against actions that could undermine democratic principles.
The former governor further called on the international community, diplomatic missions and election observation groups to take note of the incident and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect opposition leaders and uphold democratic freedoms.
