Former NLC Topshot Dies In USA


 

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announces with sadness the passing of Comrade Maureen Onyia-Ekwuazi, a respected trade unionist and labour activist in the United States where she had gone for treatment  in the course of her protracted illness. 

Maureen joined the NLC in April 1993 and served for over 30 years until her resignation in 2024.

She was dedicated to protecting workers' rights and welfare, especially in workplace health and safety.

Maureen led the Occupational Safety and Health Unit and was active in workers' education, HIV/AIDS advocacy, and social protection.

She served as Acting Head of the NLC Education Department in 2018 and helped organize national training for workers thereafter. 

Maureen was known for her commitment, courage, and belief in social justice and solidarity.

She represented the NLC in national policy discussions and contributed to improving workers' lives.

Maureen Onyia-Ekwuazi passed away on August 22, 2026. Her loss is deeply felt by her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Nigerian labour movement. The NLC sends condolences to her loved ones and honors her life of service.
