Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described his decision to pick Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election as the biggest political mistake of his career, further deepening the long-running rift between the former allies.
Obasanjo made the remark while reflecting on the political events surrounding his administration, accusing Atiku of betraying his trust shortly after they assumed office.
He alleged that his former deputy began plotting to remove him from power during their time in government, citing what he described as repeated acts of disloyalty and political scheming.
The latest comments come days after Obasanjo accused Atiku of backing an impeachment move against him during his first term in office, a claim the former Vice President has strongly denied. Atiku dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and urged the former president to openly declare his preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election instead of reviving old disputes.
