How Gunmen Abducted Worshippers At Niger Mosque


 

Gunmen abducted Muslim worshippers from Kpenya Mosque in Dekara District, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, during Friday prayers on August 21, 2026. 

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack and said the exact number of people taken was still being determined.

Niger State Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the attackers invaded Gidan-Zana and Kpenya communities before storming the mosque at about 2 p.m. Some worshippers reportedly escaped during the attack.

The police said no death was recorded, while joint security personnel have been deployed to the area to locate and rescue those abducted.

Residents reported that more than 60 worshippers were taken, but the police have not confirmed that figure. Authorities are continuing efforts to establish the number of victims and secure their release.
