FG Sets Seven-week Roadmap For Proposed National Policing Bill

The Federal Government has announced a seven-week roadmap for the proposed National Policing Bill and called on Nigerians to submit memoranda and policy proposals to help shape the legal framework for the establishment of state police.

The announcement was made by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, who said the Presidential Working Group is reviewing existing policing laws to develop a modern and accountable policing system. Public submissions will be accepted for two weeks before the draft bill is finalised.

According to the roadmap, the draft Executive Bill will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026, before wider national consultations and its transmission to the National Assembly.

The proposed legislation will outline standards for recruitment, training, funding, oversight, human rights protection, firearms control, and the transition to a dual federal and state policing system. It will also require states to meet strict operational and financial conditions before establishing their own police services.

Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi said the bill includes safeguards to ensure state police are not used for political persecution, while Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described the initiative as one of the Tinubu administration's most significant security reforms.
