Firefighters on Tuesday night battled a raging inferno that engulfed Emab Plaza, a four-storey building located behind Mandilas on Taiwo Street, Lagos Island.
The blaze, which reportedly started on the fourth floor around 7:23 p.m., spread rapidly to neighbouring apartments and adjoining structures. Eyewitnesses said thick smoke poured from the upper floors as the fire intensified.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews from its Ebute Elefun and Oniru stations were immediately deployed to the scene.
Deputy Controller-General Olajide Ogabi, who confirmed the incident at about 10 p.m., said rescue operations were still ongoing at the time.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service swiftly responded to a fire outbreak at a four-storey building, with the blaze reported from the fourth floor of Emab Plaza, located behind Mandilas, Taiwo Street, Lagos Island. The incident was reported at 19:23 hours, prompting immediate dispatch of fire crews from the Ebute Elefun and Oniru Fire Stations. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined,” Ogabi stated.
As of press time, the full extent of damage and possible casualties had not been ascertained.
