A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Jafar Abubakar, representing Mubi North, Mubi South, and Maiha Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, has reportedly doled out a staggering N224 million in cash to youths and childhood friends in his constituency.
It was reported that Abubakar released N124 million to “empower” hundreds of youths, while an additional N100 million was handed to his boyhood friends, who he claimed were not well-to-do.
The money, sources said, was withdrawn from a commercial bank in mint notes and shared directly.
Critics have described the development as another example of Nigeria's reckless political culture, where public officials flaunt questionable wealth in cash handouts, even as millions of citizens grapple with biting hunger, unemployment, and inflation.
A netizen, Daniel Pablo, wrote on Facebook: "This is why Nigeria can never work "
