NBA PRESIDENT GOOFED ON EFCC ATTACK … CACVC

Citizen Anti Corruption Volunteer Corp CACVC an NGO fighting corruption in Nigeria registers with utmost dismay the call by the NBA president that the EFCC be stripped of its prosecutorial powers.

According to him, “We need to define its mandate more narrowly and more clearly... I strongly recommend that the EFCC be limited to investigation… while prosecution should be handled by an independent resource prosecution agency”.

We at CACVC and other anti corruption coalitions in the country declines our support on the proposal made by Mahmoud led NBA. We consider it a deliberate attempt to demystify and render the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission toothless, and impotent.

CACVC is yet to grasp how the redefinition of EFCC’s mandate as proposed by the NBA Boss would yield positive results in the operations of the agency. We urge the NBA Boss to concern himself firstly with setting up anti corruption measures and well defined mechanism within its fold to checkmate the corrupt tendencies of the bar.

We make bold to say that EFCC as presently constituted is proactive, vibrant and courageous in the renewed fight against corruption in Nigeria. We are not ignorant of some powerful forces who are obviously uncomfortable with the reinvigorated anti-graft campaign of the EFCC and are desirous to render the agency toothless  by stripping it of powers to prosecute with the flimsy excuse that an agency that investigates cannot also prosecute.

CACVC sees nothing wrong with EFCC prosecution. The MBA Boss Mr. Mahmoud goofed by calling for such action. Let us support the anti graft agency to continue recording giant stride in their effort to stem corruption in both public and private entities.

We call on the highly revered Nigerian Bar Association to partner with EFCC in making sure the agency achieves its set goals. NBA has the primary responsibility of ensuring that the judiciary makes the job of EFCC less cumbersome. We pray the umbrella body of learned minds to support the on going war against corruption.
