Men
of the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, Ondo State, have
arrested one Sunday Uwanle for allegedly parading himself as a military officer
serving in the state.
The
37-year-old indigene of Kogi State was reportedly arrested in an army uniform
by men of the brigade who were on routine patrol on Tuesday at the Oluwatuyi
area.
He
was said to be fighting some men in the area when he was apprehended.
Parading
the suspect on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the brigade, Capt.
Ojo Adelegan, said the suspect had been using the uniform to terrorise
residents of Akure and its environs.
He
said, “Our investigation revealed that the suspect, who was always wearing army
uniform, was involved in some of the robbery operations in Ondo and some
neighbouring states.
“We
have a report that he robbed a man in Akure of two vehicles, which he had been
using to terrorise the people. Sometimes, he would go to petrol stations and
cause trouble.
Everybody
was scared of him because they thought he was a soldier. They also know him as
a soldier at many police stations in Ondo State.”
Adelegan
said the suspect confessed that he bought the uniform from a retired soldier,
who is a chief security officer of a branch of a commercial bank in Akure.
Some
of the items allegedly recovered from him, according to the brigade PRO,
included a motorcycle, an army uniform and the identity card of a police
officer.
He
said the suspect had been handed over to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the
state police command for further investigation.
