ORGY OF VIOLENCE CONTINUES AS BAYELSA RERUN ELECTION HOLDS TODAY

Barely hours to the supplementary election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (SILGA) and 101 polling units in six other local government councils in Bayelsa state, the battle for the soul of that state has begun in earnest as supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged themselves in an all out practical battle in Ekeremor.

The theatre of war on Friday was Ekeremor where PDP stalwarts, including the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly and one time chairman of the board of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Boyelayefa Debekeme, and the Chairman of the Eleremor Local Government Council, Hon. Billy Tobiye, were reported to have machete cuts inflicted on them.

Besides, the Ward agent of the PDP and Secretary of the Local Government Council, Tams Alari and traditional ruler of Ekeremor, HRH Agbodo Gbaseimo, were also injured in the bloody conflict.

Already, supporters of the PDP are said to have lost out in the battle to take over Ekeremor as they were said to have been forced out by the APC warriors.

All this is happening even as it was confirmed that all materials for the election had arrived safely to all areas where the election will take place, as the battle rages on.

Thirteen thousands votes are said to be at stake in Ekeremor alone, while the total number of votes that will determine who wins the election is about 150,000.

So far, the total number of votes already declared for both parties are less than 200,000 votes, a situation which makes whoever garners the highest votes in this election the winner.

Following the onslaught in Ekeremor, attempts by the PDP supporters to protest the APC clampdown have been unsuccessful, even as Thisday gathered that the APC are already locking down SILGA as at the time of this report.

In the attack at Ekeremor, the Governor’s Lodge was said to have been attacked as it was said to be housing suspected thugs of the PDP chieftains.
The troubled Ekeremor Local Government area is the home of the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobri and has over 13,000 votes to be contested for by the various political parties.

Crying out after the invasion, a Government House source claimed that “the armed men were hired by the APC and that they were brandishing dangerous weapons including guns, machetes and cudgels and clearly high on drug-infused adrenaline.”

According to him, “The invaders, unfazed by the presence of security operatives, descended on Rt. Hon. Debekeme and others with machetes and other weapons of war.”
