Military,Boko Haram Battle Rages On In Bama,70 Killed

The Nigerian military says it has killed around seventy fighters from the Islamic group Boko Haram, during an attack by the militants on the north-eastern town of Bama.

Officials say rebels arrived at the town in the early morning in armoured tanks and trucks. Local reports say the attack has been repelled by government soldiers.

A spokesman for an anti-Boko Haram vigilante group said most of Bama's residents have fled to Borno's state capital, Maiduguri - around 70 kilometres away.

A report last month by Amnesty International said four-thousand people - mostly civilians - have been killed this year in the conflict between Boko Haram and the security forces
