Gunmen
suspected to be hired assassins, Tuesday night, shot dead an aide to the Imo
State Speaker, Hon. Kingsley Nkemka, on his way from his village along
Nworiubi-Mberi road.
Nkemka,
a former member of the assembly, until his untimely death, was a top contending
aspirant for the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru federal constituency seat for the House of
Representatives on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Information has it that the late aide was visibly hale and hearty at the resumption of sitting at the assembly chambers on the very day of his death and dutifully undertook his official responsibilities.
It was
stated that Nkemka, had after the plenary of the House, travelled to some of
the electoral Wards in Mbaitoli Loca Government Area, which is part of the
federal constituency he was aspiring to represent, in continuation of visits to
some party leaders in the area to adequately fine-tune necessary requirements
needed for an eventual Ward meetings scheduled to take place the next day.
After his
visit, the deceased reportedly made a brief stopover at the popular T-junction,
Ohaohia Mbieri, to also meet with one of his supposed facilitators who had
called him between 8p.m. to 9p.m.
It was also
revealed that at the point of contact between him and the said facilitator,
together with his campaign organisation’s Director-General, the hoodlums
numbering about five suddenly barged into the scene, kicked out his
facilitator, ransacked his pockets and shot him on his ankle, while ordering
him into the booth of his Toyota car where they finally shot him at close
range.
It was
learnt that the office of the Speaker had alerted the police on getting the
news of the incident, which subsequently produced results as several arrests
linking the murder were made.
The Imo
State House of Assembly, especially his colleagues at the office of the
Speaker, had been thrown into mourning on receiving the sad news, as many
described him as a worthy and an easy-going gentleman, whose mutual respect for
his co-workers and dedication to his duties would be a strong point to remember
in his lifetime.
The Speaker,
Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, who was on an official assignment to Abuja,
expressed his utmost shock over the painful incident and promised that the
security agencies in the state would be given the maximum co-operation needed
to unmask those behind the heinous crime and bring them to justice.
