The crisis
rocking the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), yesterday took a bad turn as
its members Friday, rejected the resignation of its President, Dr Lawrence
Obembe.
The crisis emanated from the National Executive Council ( NEC ) meeting of the NMA, where Obembe was said to be in full support for the suspension of the one month strike.
The crisis emanated from the National Executive Council ( NEC ) meeting of the NMA, where Obembe was said to be in full support for the suspension of the one month strike.
The crisis
came despite public plea to members of NMA to call off their one month strike
and intervene in assisting with the provision of care to Ebola infected
patients and prevent further spread of the infectious disease, the
association insisted to continue with the strike.
Contrary to
earlier speculations Wednesday night that the strike had been called off in the
interest of the nation, it was learnt that the argument for the suspension of
the industrial action could not sail through.
A source had
earlier said that the "strike has been suspended though under
controversial circumstances. Work is expected to resume at once."
This was not
to be as the deal broke down owing to the bickering and acrimony emanating from
the NMA meeting. It was gathered that in the early hours of Thursday
there was pandemonium at the venue of the NMA meeting.
The
meeting which took place at Vines Hotel, Durumi area of Abuja became rowdy as
those in support of calling off the strike tried to push their position through.
A source who attended the meeting said that the NMA president, Obembe was particularly in support of the call off of the strike, while some were opposed to the idea
