SOME of the 500 Nigerian soldiers alleged to have run away during the
battle with the Boko Haram insurgents in Gwoza, Borno State, have resurfaced in
Mubi, Adamawa State.
Eyewitness in Mubi revealed that residents saw the returning soldiers in
the wee hours of Tuesday, as most of them were in torn uniforms.
It was, however, revealed that they could not ascertain whether they
were among the 500 soldiers that fled to Cameroon or not, though most of the
troops that participated in Gwoza operation were drawn from the special unit
battalion based in Mubi.
According to an eyewitness, “we saw some of them purchasing second hand
clothes at the Mubi main market and were in tattered uniforms.
“Initially, we were afraid; as people panicked when we sighted the
troops. They arrived in the wee hours and people began to scamper for
safety, because no one knows their mission.”
The Defence Headquarters, however, confirmed that troops who returned
from Cameroon were addressed by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General
Zaruwa, as they embarked on another mission in the counter terrorism campaign.
