It was all
sorrow and tears as the body of the late gospel musician, Irikefe Don
Momoh, also known as Kefee, was flown in from United States of America to
Nigeria on Thursday night.
The late
musician’s burial ceremony took place at her hometown in Okpara, Sapele in
Delta State as her remains were takenround Sapele metropolis, where she grew up
with her family.
Her remains
arrived Okpara in a white casket, surrounded by six pall bearers
who helped in carrying the body around the streets filled
with family, friends and well- wishers of the musician.
During the
week, a candlelight procession was held in honour of Kefee at the Oba Akenzua
Cultural Centre, Benin City, Edo State, as her colleagues, all dressed in
black, listened to sermons, songs and speeches rendered in honour of the
late vocalist.
Among other
gospel artistes who performed were Maleke, Benjamin Okorodion, Ifeoma
Ikusemoro, Godfather and Asemota.
Kefee’s death
was announced on Friday, June 13, 2014 in an official statementwas
released by her United Kingdom-based manager, Adeline Adebayo. The statement
read: “On behalf of the family, it is with great sadness but grateful hearts
that we announce the passing to glory due to lungs failure this morning of our
God’s mouthpiece, chorus leader, daughter, wife, sister, friend, Kefee Branama
Queen … May her beautiful, gentle and precious soul rest in perfect peace.
Amen!
“In contrast
to all earlier rumours and stories in circulation, I do state that Kefee wasn’t
six months pregnant and neither did she have pre-eclampsia. “
Kefee’s
death happened the day veteran filmmaker, Amaka Igwe, was buried.
Until her death,
Kefee lived with her husband in the United States; pursued courses in video
production and directing and managed her restaurant, Branama Kitchen, which was
launched in 2012 in Lagos.
This project
did not last long though, as the restaurant was closed down a few months after
it was opened.
It was
gathed that Kefee’s husband, Teddy, said that
Kefee’s family had requested that she be buried in their hometown,
Okpara-Inland, Ethiope East local government Area, with a celebratory service
in Sapele afterwards and that he was comfortable with it.
Kefee, until
her death, an aftermath of 15-day coma, had been active in the
entertainment industry in the past ten years.
She was born on February 5, 1980 in Sapele, Delta
State and was known as the Branama Queen, in reference to her debut hit track
and album, ‘Branama’. She also scored a hit with the track, ‘Kokoroko’,
featuring Timaya and had four albums to her credit— ‘Branama’ (2003), ‘Branama
2’ (2005), ‘A Piece of Me’ (2009) and ‘Chorus Leader’ in 2013
