Man Sentenced To Death For Robbing And Raping Youth Corper

A member of a local vigilance group in Delta State, Ebikeme Igangan has been sentenced to death by hanging by the state High Court sitting in Warri for robbing a female shop owner of valuables worth over N3 million.
Ebikeme was convicted along with his co-accused, Ovwigho Udjor, a welder, for robbing the victim and raping her cousin, a member of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Ebikeme (26), a native of Ogbe-Ijaw in Warri South Local Government Area and Udjor (36) of Jesse in Ethiope West Council Area were found guilty of the three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and rape preferred against them by the prosecution.
They were slammed with the death sentence on the counts of conspiracy and armed robbery. The convicts and three others now at large had in December 2010 at Shell, Ogunu within the Warri Judicial Division, robbed a manager of a popular shop inside the Shell Yard of various valuables including two laptop computers, jewellery, five Nokia handsets, a Motorola Blade handset and cash of N2.8 million.
But apparently not satisfied with the loot, they went to the victim’s house near the Shell Yard and raped the cousin of the victim, a corps member, who was on a visit as at the time of the incident.
