The much-awaited National Conference will start
tomorrow with the inauguration of 492 delegates at the Federal Captial
Territory Abuja by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The citizenry have been looking to the confab which
has been announced will last for three months. The expectations of many
Nigerians are that the conference would be used to address the nation’s
multifaceted challenges that it had been battling with in the last 100 years.
Many are however also skeptical that nothing serious
or new would come out of the conference, taking into cognisance the past
experience of such conferences.
President Jonathan on the occasion of the 53rd
Independence anniversary, in a nationwide broadcast announced the setting up of
an Advisory Committee mandated to establish modalities for a national
conference aimed at resolving issues that currently cause friction in the
polity.
The committee, which has Dr. Femi Okurounmu as chairman
and Dr. Akilu Indabawa as secretary, advised the President on the scope and
agenda for the gathering after a nationwide consultation.
It was learnt that though, the Federal
Government has released guidelines for the conference, it has been a subject of
controversy.
