Ahead of the
PDP primary for the Ekiti state governorship election, about 12
chieftains of the party have signified interest for the party ticket.
The
party primary would hold on March 15 while INEC has fixed June 21 for the
governorship election.
Among those
who have picked the nomination forms were former minister Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd),
Prince Dayo Adeyeye,Senator Gbenga Aluko, Chief Bisi Omoyeni, Mr Ayo Fayose
and Chief Biodun Aluko.
Also
yesterday, four governorship aspirants also surfaced at the party national
secretariat to pick the nomination forms.
The list
include,Prince Bodunde Adeyanju, Honourable Adewale Aribisala,
Otunba Peter Obafemi and Mrs. Bola Oloyede.
Addressing
newsmen yesterday, the four aspirants spoke in favour of the consensus option
which they believed would ensure that the PDP confront the ruling APC
government in Ekiti state as a united opposition party.
Prince
Bodunde Adeyanju, told newsmen that there was the need for all
aspirants to agree to the consensus option ahead of the governorship election
in order to defeat the incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi of the APC.
“If you go to
the war with a factionalised team, you won`twin.”
“The best
thing for the PDP now that they want to go and face APC is to ensure unity in
the state chapter of the party.”
Speaking in
same vein, the only female aspirant who has picked the expression of
interest form, Mrs Bola Oloyede declared that conduct of primary to pick
the party ticket would further polarise the PDP in the state. Another
aspirant, Peter Obafemi said the idea of consensus candidate as canvassed
by President Goodluck Jonathan was to help avoid rancour that often trail
primary in the party.
He however
expressed aversion to the zoning arrangement for the emergence of the party
candidate.
“You don’t
zone what you don’t have;right now PDP is not in government in Ekiti, it is the
APC that is in government that can be talking of zoning and not PDP. Let
us leave that alone for now and work for the success of the party. After that,
we can be talking of zoning”.
