GHANIAN PRESIDENT TO DELIVER FRSC 5th ANNUAL SERIES LECTURE

President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, John Mahama will be guest speaker at the Federal Road Safety Commission’s 5th Annual Lecture Series, slated for 11th December, 2013 at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja.
This year’s lecture  by the FRSC, is in continuation of the need to stimulate public discourse and action on the developmental challenges towards realizing set goals for safer roads in the African continent, in the 21st century,  with the theme : Safer Roads: A 21st Century Development Challenge”.
The annual lecture will focus on review of Africa’s growth prospect, analyze the growing incidents of road traffic crashes and attendant deaths arising from this and challenging Africa to view road safety as a development issue. The forum will further re-energize the campaign to create safer roads in Africa.
An eloquent champion of the underprivileged, President Mahama was first elected to the Parliament of Ghana in 1996 to represent the Bole/Bamboi Constituency for a four-year term. In April 1997, he was then appointed as Deputy Minister of Communications. He rose to become the substantive Minister of Communications by November, 1998.
As Minister of Communications, President Mahama also served as the Chairman of the National Communications Authority, in which capacity he played a key role in stabilizing Ghana's telecommunications sector after it was deregulated in 1997. He also served as a member of the National Economic Management Team, a founding member of the Ghana AIDS Commission, a member of the implementation committee of the 2000 National Population Census and a Deputy Chairman of the Publicity Committee for the re-introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Continuing to expand his interest and involvement in international affairs, in 2003 President Mahama became a member of the Pan-African Parliament, serving as the Chairperson of the West African Caucus. In 2005 he was, additionally, appointed the Minority Spokesman for Foreign Affairs.
President Mahama also has a keen interest in environmental affairs, particularly the problem of plastic pollution in Africa, which he committed himself to addressing during his tenure as Vice President.
It would be recalled that the Former Secretary of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku was guest speaker at the inaugural edition of the FRSC annual lecture series in 2009 with the theme: “Sustainable Development and Road Safety” while the National President of International Road Federation, KK Kapila was guest speaker at the 2010 edition on “Decade of Action on Road Safety: Imperatives for Developing Economies”.
Other previous speakers include the Adjutant Professor in Transport Engineering and Injury Prevention at the La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, Prof. Richard Tay in 2011, with theme: “ Achieving the Decade of Action on Road Safety: 2011-2020” and last year’s theme was “ Safe and Sustainable Transportation: Lesson for Nigeria” with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Association (AAMVA), Neil Schuster as guest speaker.
