The Anambra State
chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday held two parallel state
congresses in two locations in Awka, the state capital, to elect candidates for
the party in the coming governorship election in the state.
In one of the congresses, held at the
Emmaus House, a former governor of the state, Senator Andy Uba won the while
voting was still going on at the other primary conducted at both the Women
Development Centre in Awka and the Alex Ekwueme Square.
Senator Uba scored 605 votes to
defeat Senator Emma Anosike, who scored 110 votes to come second in the primary
which was conducted without incident but with notable security presence.
The primary conducted at the Emmaus,
which was won by Andy Uba, was that of the PDP faction in the state headed by Chief
Ejike Oguebego, while that of the faction led by Prince Ken Emeakayi was still
voting at the Ekwueme Square at press time.
The two claimants to the PDP
chairmanship in the state, Chief Oguebego and Prince Emeakayi had, two weeks
ago, conducted parallel ward congresses where delegates for Saturday’s congress
were elected.
While Prince Emeakayi is seen as the
chairman recognised by the national leadership of the party, the same party was
said to have, in June, through its former national secretary, submitted the
name of Chief Oguebego as the chairman of the state chapter of the party to the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing a congress conducted
by the party in the state in 2013.
While it was said that INEC had been
working with the Oguebego since then, the Emeakayi faction had the presence of
the PDP Congress Committee for the state headed by Governor Ibrahim Shema of
Katsina State.
Those on the official list of the
state chapter of PDP as candidates are: Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr. Obinna
Uzoh, Nzeh Akachukwu Nwankpo, Barr. Mike Okoye, Chief Ugochukwu Ubah, Comrade
Tony Nwoye, Amb. Jerry Ugokwe, Iyom Josephin Anenih, Senator Emma Anosike, Mr
Walter Okeke, Dr Alex Obiogbolu, Charles Odunukwe, and Mrs Krema Agatha.
Meanwhile, it is believed that Prince
Ukachukwu was set to emerge as the candidate of the Emeakayi faction, which
conducted its accreditation at the Women Development Centre before it conveyed
the delegates amid heavy security to Ekwueme Centre for actual voting.
They were said to have signed a
document in which they agreed that only accredited delegates would vote at both
congresses, with the police and other security agencies providing security for
both factions.
