The police in conjunction with Intercontinental Distillers Limited, makers of various types of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, have recovered machines suspected to be used in producing fake brands of its products in Aba, Abia State.
Abia State Commissioner of Police, Usman Tili Abubakar, who confirmed the recovery, said three machines used for the illegal business were recovered and two suspects arrested after series of police raids of their hideouts in Aba. He said the two persons arrested are already helping police with their investigation.
He said the company reported to the police of the illegal production of its products which is being sold to unsuspecting members of the public in various markets in Aba.
He said they were able to identify the area where the machines were used in carrying out the act, adding that they recovered an imported machine from China used for the illegal business and arrested one of the workers.
Abubakar said the owner of the illegal factory was later picked up with two more machines.
“There is nothing wrong in the production of the drinks, but what is wrong is using another company’s name without authorization to produce such drinks,’’ he said.
A senior staff of the company in Aba, who asked for anonymity, commended the prompt response of the police in the fight against adulteration of its brand.
He said genuine companies suffer untold hardship and lose huge sums of money because of adulteration, stressing that it is important to buy original products of a brand to ensure safety.
