SAGAMU ROAD CRASH: FRSC CONFIRMS 2 INJURED

PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE USE

ABUJA: 02 JUNE, 2012

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that two persons were seriously injured at Danko along Lagos-Ibadan expressway in a multiple road crash involving 24 vehicles.

According to the Corps Public Education Officer; Jonas Agwu, Corps Commander, the road crash which occured at 11:45pm yesterday, was attributed to spillage of petrol from a Tanker (XA903GGW) which fell down, resulting to a fire outbreak, affecting 11 Trailers, 10 Luxury buses, 5 Mini Buses, 4 Tankers, 2 Pick-up vehicles , a car and 176 people.

Speaking further, the Corps Public Education Officer said that “the timely response of FRSC rescue team, the Police and the Fire Service was able to bring the situation under control, while the injured victims have been taken to the hospital for medical attention”.

As at press time, the combined team of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Police and other relevant agencies were still removing affected vehicles from the road to ensure free flow of traffic while the FRSC has reiterated its appeal to fleet operators and Tanker to embrace the provisions Road Transport Safety Standard Scheme by ensuring strict conformity with minimum safety standard through proper maintenance of their vehicles.

Other category of motorists are equally enjoined to strictly comply with traffic rules and regulations and avoid travelling at night when visibility is impaired in order to reduce the spate of avoidable road crashes on the nation’s highways

It would be recalled that 2 persons were killed and 5 others were injured at the same location (Danko) along Lagos- Ibadan expressway on 31 may, 2012 at 3.00pm as a result of dangerous driving and petrol spillage from a tanker which led to a fire outbreak, affecting 10 vehicles and 30 people. The Ogun State Sector Command was involved in the rescue operation with the Fire Service personnel to extinguish the fire while dead victims were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

To checkmate this unpleasant trend, the Federal Road Safety Corps; in its on-going re-allignment of patrol and rescue operations, has deployed patrol teams along identified black spots and accident-prone routes across the country even a as the Corps has vowed to take drastic measures against drivers and owners of vehicles involved in road crashes, after its investigations.
