15 Years Raped Victim Dies While Attempting To Abort The Baby,As Police Arrest Her Rapists

TWO teenage suspects have been arrested by the police in Oyo State for raping a 15-year-old girl, Rabi Bashiru  Ziki, resulting in pregnancy which she aborted, an action which eventually led to her death. Rabi was of the Northern extract and lived in Sabo area of Ibadan, until Monday, May 28, 2012 when she died.

Information gathered revealed that Rabi had been exhibiting signs of illness with complaints of pain in her stomach and entire body, to the point that she found it difficult to sit down. Her uncle, Alhaji Malami Mohammed’s efforts towards seeking medical solution to Rabi’s illness yielded no fruits until he decided that she should be taken for ultrasound scan. Knowing very well what the outcome would be, coupled with the fact that she knew her health was seriously failing, Rabi was reported to have confessed to having an abortion but said she was raped and was so ashamed that she could not tell anyone of her experience.

Rabi’s revelation was as startling as it was shocking when her family members listened to her blood-chilling experience. According to Rabi, a young Hausa boy who also lived in Sabo and was called Balarabe Chandai had courted her friendship. Though she agreed to be his friend, she never visited him at home or went out with him despite pressures.

A few months ago, Balarabe had reportedly put a call through to Rabi. When she saw him, he asked her to follow him somewhere and she did. Balarabe took her to no other place than his room but to Rabi’s shock, he started raining slaps on her and beating her. Her attempts to cry earned her more beatings and in no time, Balarabe reportedly invited two young boys into the room, after which he instructed Rabi to remove her underwear. Seeing her reluctance in obeying the order, one of the teenagers, 18-yr-old Mohammed Dikko reportedly rushed at her and removed her pants himself, after which he forcefully had sex with her.

Not satisfied, Balarabe was reported to have asked the second boy, 17-year-old Mohammed Sani, to do same. Sani refused to do so and this was said to have infuriated Balarabe so much that he broke a bottle and threatened to stab Sani if he would not have sex with Rabi. Trembling, Sani did. Not yet satisfied with his sadistic action, Balarabe was reported by Rabi to have continued beating Rabi till she left after he was satisfied.

Unable to bear the shame that would follow if she told anyone of her experience, Rabi kept the incident to herself, unknown to her that the action of the two boys would still come to bear on her. Some weeks after she was allegedly raped, Rabi started feeling sick and was very pale. She decided to secretly go for a pregnancy test which was confirmed to be positive. Scared of what could become of her and the baby whose father she would not be able to pinpoint out of the two boys that raped her, Rabi decided to visit a quack doctor at Dugbe area who aborted the pregnancy for her.

Rabi went back home but continued to bleed. After some time, the bleeding stopped but she still felt very sick, with pain in her stomach and her entire body, so much that she could not sit on her own.

After the confession, Crime Features learnt that the young girl was taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment on Friday May 25 and was admitted in the emergency unit. Unfortunately, she died on Monday morning as a result of the complications she suffered from the abortion.

Speaking with Crime Features when his own side of the story was sought, Sani said he and his friend, Dikko were standing by a food seller in December 2011, waiting to buy Indomie when Balarabe approached them and asked them to follow him. Knowing that a refusal could spell doom for them, as Balarabe was alleged to be a notorious boy in the community, they followed him and it was in their presence that he called Rabi.

“Rabi came to meet him and he slapped her twice. He had smoked Indian Hemp before calling her. He asked the girl to follow him and she did not refuse. Two of them walked in front of Dikko and me. He took her to his room and asked her to enter. Later he asked us in and locked the door. He brought out Alomo Bitters and drank. He started beating the girl again and asked Dikko to have sex with her.  Dikko did his bid because of the threat to stab him. After Dikko, Balarabe said it was my turn and I refused. He broke a bottle and also threatened to stab me. I had to comply.

“After the sex session, I left the room, followed by Rabi who could not even take her pants from the room. The following day, we asked Balarabe why he humiliated the girl like that  and he replied that she stole his dress and perfume. We went to Rabi to ask but she denied. However, we later got to know that it was another girlfriend of Balarabe who stole the items from his room because that one had a key to his room. The girlfriend later confessed and we had to go to Rabi to apologise for what we did to her at the promptings of Balarabe. She replied that she forgave us but would never forgive Balarabe.

Balarabe did not go to apologise.
“We were arrested on Saturday May 26 by Rabi’s brothers who eventually took us to Mokola Police Station. It was on Monday we were told that the girl was dead. We never wished her dead and we did what we did because of fear for our lives,” Sani narrated.

Sani’s story was corroborated by Dikko who denied removing the deceased’s girl’s pants, claiming that it was even difficult for him to get an erection. Sani however confessed that they both ejaculated into her.

However, the PPRO, Mrs Olabisi Ilobanafor, in her reaction to the story said that though the girl was allegedly raped, there was no hint that she committed abortion but had vaginal infection which could be as a result of rape. Police investigation continues at SCID. Rabi’s corpse had been released to the family for burial while Balarabe is currently at large
