Unconfirmed source said over 13 people were feared killed in the attack, but the police said nobody was killed.
The affected areas are Elegbete and some neighbouring communities. The militants were said to have struck between 9.00am and 10.00am on Monday.
Heavy gunshots were heard in the area as people ran to safety, while schools and businesses were hurriedly shut by their owners to avert being caught in the invasion.
Uduimoh Ipeakhai, a resident in Igbolomu said streets in the areas were now deserted as people fled home, adding that schools, shops, markets and other businesses centres in the areas were now like ghost town as people deserted them.
Parents hurried ran to school to take their children home while the police and army have taken over the area to provide security.
An eye witness, who craved anonymity said the militants invaded a school in the area, but allowed the children to go, warning them not to return to school again.
Residents are said to be fleeing Elegbete area as they did not know when the gunmen, suspected to be militants would launch another attack again. People were said to have carried their loads, mattresses and fled the area to pitch their tent at Igbolomu and Agbede areas of Ikorodu.
Another version of the story had it that some gunmen robbed a place in Elegbete and later lodged in a hotel in the area. A landlord in the community was said to have licked the information to the police who came and shot two of the gunmen dead and arrested four others.
The gunmen were said to have gone to mobilize and launched house to house attack aimed specifically at landlords and killed some of them before the security operatives intervened.
A police source told TheNEWS that the attack was carried out by the Ijaw boys who invaded the area, but said the Commissioner of Police had deployed large number of mobile policemen to the area to maintain peace.
Three Armoured Personnel Carriers, APC, have been deployed to the troubled area as military men and the police were seen with guns patrolling the area.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dolapo Badmus confirmed the attack, saying that everything was now in control.
She told TheNEWS on phone that the police authority had deployed well armed policemen to maintain peace in the area, adding that the army had also been deployed to the area to prevent further crisis.
Badmus debunked reports that 13 people were killed. She said this was not true, but assured that the police and military men had taken over the area as normalcy returned.
