In the drive to attaining its yearly goal of trending down Road Traffic Crashes and reducing fatality rate by 15%, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Speed Limiting Device initiative that has raised concerns in the polity among different interest groups now have gained grounds with the today's ruling by Justice Chukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a case instituted against the Corps by Registered Trustees of International Human Rights and Anti Corruption Society.
According to Bisi Kazeem, Head Media Relations and Strategy, “the case against FRSC at the Federal High Court Abuja by Registered Trustees of International Human Rights & Anti Corruption Society in Suit No FHC/Abj/CS/805/15 challenging the powers of FRSC on the speed limiter was today dismissed by the Federal High Court, Abuja presided over by Justice Chukwu who described the positions of the opponents to the Speed Limiting Device as lacking in merit”.
The Spokesman of the Corps further stressed that the Court held that FRSC has acted in line with its statutory powers by introducing , imposing and implementing the use of the speed limiting device in Nigeria.
According to Kazeem, the entire Corps is excited at the landmark judgement as it has emboldened them to continue to strive and work towards achieving the 2016 strategic goals, he said the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi was full of praises for the judiciary especially the Courage of the High court judge who delivered the landmark ruling.
In the words of the Corps Marshal, "It is the interest of of Nigerians that propels us to device methods of reducing road traffic crashes futher, haven realised that speed accounts for a larger proportion of causes of crashes in Nigeria. Certainly, this judgment will equally propel us to do more in curbing rate of road crashes in Nigeria”.
Commander Kazeem assured that the Corps is positive that with its introduction, Nigerians and all FRSC major stakeholders will notice the reduction in crashes, and adds that it is the interest of the Corps Marshal to see a situation where this preventive measure put in place works for the best of all Nigerians.
It will be recalled that the Speed Limiter has the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari and the implementation date was originally the 1st of April 2016 before concerns were raised about the innovation; the Corps at this point appeals to all m to see the initiative , as one that is in the interest of the the motoring public.
