The House of Representatives yesterday resolved to
investigate the alleged killings of some citizens by officers of the Nigeria
Customs Service (NCS) in some communities of Sokoto State.
Adopting
a motion by Rep Abdullahi Balarabe Salame (APC, Sokoto), the House urged
Customs to immediately stop the incessant killings of citizens in communities
such as Gada; Wurno; Tangaza; Gwadabawa; Kware; Wammakp; Binji and Sokoto. The
House mandated its committee on Customs to conduct a holistic investigation on
the matter and report back within two weeks.
It also
urged the government to compensate all the victims or their families.
The House
said that all the unnecessary road blocks mounted in the areas by all security
agencies, which “were used as apparatus of exploitations, extortions and
harassment of innocent Nigerians in the areas” should be dismantled. Leading
debate on the motion, Rep Salame said on February 28, one of his constituents
named Shuaibu Lawal was shot dead by a Customs officer after being stopped at
an army check point in Gidan Fulani, near Gwadabawa town.
